The BJS Marathon celebrates the life of the incomparable Joseph Shabalala, the 5 time Grammy Award winning leader of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Tying the event to his roots, the Marathon starts outside the Kirkintulloch Primary School where Joseph spent his formative years. Rules for BJS Marathon
  1. Entries close 17h00 on Thursday 09 February 2023. There are no late entries. No substitution will be permitted.
  2. Race numbers and shirts can be collected at Registration at the eMnambithi Sports Centre on Friday 10 February 2023 from 10h00 to 17h00
  3. All entrants receive a quality moisture management race shirt. These can be collected at Registration.
  4. All athletes must be licenced. Licenced runners must wear their club colours together with their 2023 licence numbers on the front and back of their upper outer garment and the BJS Marathon race number on the front of their upper outer garment. The race number must be placed over the licence number so that the province, year and ASA sponsor logo is visible.
  5. Unlicenced athletes must wear a temporary licence. These athletes must wear plain colour clothing (with no advertising), the temporary licence on the back of their upper outer garment and the BJS Marathon race number on the front of their upper outer garment. No licence number to be worn on shorts. Temporary licence numbers will be available for collection at Registration. Temporary licences will also be sold at Registration.
  6. The BJS Marathon is held under the rules of WA, ASA and KZNA
  7. All foreign athletes must comply with WA rule 4.2, rule 22.1 and rule 142 and ASA rule 9.
  8. Entrants must be at least the following ages on the day of the race: 42KM – 20 Years, 21KM – 16 Years, 10KM – 14 Years
  9. The ASA/KZNA approved numerical age category tags (60mm – 80mm) must be worn on the back and front of athletes upper outer garment for those competing for category prizes. Junior athletes must be 19 years and younger on the 31 December in the year of the competition. Proof of age must be provided on request before or after the race.
  10. A secure tog bag area will be available on the day of the race at the Settlers Park .
  11. Athletes are to obey traffic officials, technical officials, event marshalls and safety officers at all times.
  12. No personal seconding is allowed.
  13. No blades or wheelchairs or mechanically operated devices are allowed
  14. No ipods or any other form of earphone type device may be used during the race.
  15. No pets are allowed in the race.
  16. Entry fees shall not be refunded, cancelled returned or exchanged on account of weather or unforseen events occuring beyond the control of the event organisers, the race director, the host club or the sponsors.
  17. The BJS Marathon supports and promotes the clean running campaign. Please help our event and our sport and throw your coke bottles and water sachets in the bins provided.
  18. Transport (optional) will be available to transport runners from bag drop to start line, the transport cost will be R60.
